AI image generation is actually an outgrowth of image recognition software research, including facial recognition. It was sort of "hey, what if we sort of reverse the process that we are using to "teach" the training model to show what it is attempting to recognize in an image. With facial recognition one of the things it tried to find were "eyes" I remember seeing some articles about the images early work produced were very surreal images that had eyes all over the image as basic components on the generated image, very odd looking. this was around 2014 - 2015 IIRC.
