In 2003 when I was doing my 2nd Software Engineering degree in Brookes, AI was one of the subjects. Till then working in professional software development our experience with AI is mixed and even though the application of AI in automation increased it didn't work out wonders where it should've been. In manufacturing automation application still is very limited, also not in major industries like construction, even in financial services it's still not trusted, there are lots of hypes and lots of potential but out side the realm of some low skill jobs or smart phones, social media and some education sector the impact is pretty limited and most likely don't pass the huge energy investment required to support it. We are still quite far from a long promised self driven car which requires limited AI involvement.
