My friend almost lost 800,000 dollars because of a deepfake. He was selling a house and the deal was all negotiated with the seller, and the closing was about to happen, and my friend coincidentally meets his lawyer at a 7-11 and the lawyer's like "yeah, I changed the account number like you wanted me to" and my friend's like "what?" Turns out that someone had intercepted his e-mail communications with his lawyer and changed the account number that the proceeds would have gone to. They got the police involved, who got the FBI involved. Turns out that if the lawyer had wired the money to the other account, my friend would have never seen it. It was only thanks to their chance meeting at a 7-11 that this was averted.
