When you don't need the steering wheel, etc. the cars inside can change. Some of the self-driving cars in China are configured to have 2 benches facing each other, larger windows, and a less long overall car. This means you can put your bags in front of you, or to the side, or fit 4 people able to talk facing each other, etc.
A smaller car means more cars fit on the road and parking spaces too. Seems they would be lighter too, meaning less wear and tear of roads.
