I use ai to generate concept work, but I am firmly against using anything generated directly or to generate revenue. I find it a great way to inform compositions or even just basic blocking. I would never slap an AI piece on the cover of a book or something, but as a stepping stone it is a fantastic tool. I have been an artist for nearly 40 years, I understand that the downsides far outweigh the good, but in responsible hands it is a useful tool for taking first steps in a project. I do think it is inevitable, sad as it is, but we can hope for regulation such as artists opting in as you suggested, that's a very fair approach. On a final note, I will say there is an entire army of us drawing exactly like Jim Lee or Todd McFarlane, some of us getting paid to create artwork that is directly derivative without any complaint. We walk fine lines here.
