While the chess engine beating Kasparov and the subsequent chess engines, that reached astronomical heights are technically AI , don't really know how to play chess.
They are search tree optimized tools , that effectively estimate the best possible in each position.
But, that's about it. They don'y know what chess is, they don't know what they are moving and they don't know of course they are running an algorithm.
Large language models though, still not there regarding human capacity , are light years ahead every chess engine even when they hallucinate . If you don't know what you are doing and can't provide meaning about why you do it you are not intelligent. LLMs can do it up to a degree so we can say with certainty , they are intelligence , albeit one making its first few baby steps.
People often get confused , because of the elo an LLM and a chess engine can achieve. That's because they miss the elephant in the room.
