Unfortunately, as many are coming to realize, 'AI' is a giant bubble which cannot live up to the promises being made for it. Even the narrative of AI being an 'existential threat' is hyped to make people think its 'dangerously awesome', so as to encourage further investment into the bubble. Right now we have what are incredibly-souped-up autocomplete systems, based on a staggeringly vast amount of both compute and data. The sheer power of these systems enables them to perform impressive tricks, but blinds us to their limitations To get to 'AGI' would actually require several breakthroughs into areas experts currently have only vague concept of. Investors kid themselves that AGI will magically 'emerge' from these systems, if only they are just given enough data & compute. But increasing quantity rarely brings about qualitative improvements. The oligarchs stand to make a killing, even though the inevitable collapse of the bubble will devastate the economy, and the lives of millions with it. Altman and his ilk, in their more sober moments know that it is a scam, to enrich themselves at the expense of society. But, hey: that's Neoliberalism for you.
