They are genuinely building a utopia. AI will, if taken to it's logical conclusion, do away with basic scarcity. Obviously it's not guaranteed, and the structure of that society is variable, but the technology at least makes such a post-scarcity society possible. If that society was fully realised this wouldn't even be an issue for the most part, since artists would not be financially dependent on their works and could contribute to the training data as a hobby. Copyright wouldn't even need to exist.
That is probably how they (the AI devs solar mentions) justify it, and personally I am inclined to agree with them. However even if they successfully develop the tech, and we eventually reach such a "utopia" (I think the term is misleading because it suggests a perfect society when really it's more like an "easy" or "comfortable" society, post basic-scarcity is probably the best term), the transition toward such a society would likely be brutal. It would involve the virtual collapse of an economic system that has more or less existed for all of human history.
