AI prompting is the equivalent of exacto knife magazine collages, only instead of cutting from random pictures from paper your puking out whatever is smeared all over the internet. So long as your not calling it art, and your not selling it, and you remember HOW its being made while respecting that fact, then I think its fine to mess around. I do both traditional, digital, and mess around with AI from time to time, its just a great way to toy around with ideas and mash things together to garner a separate idea that you can then come up with on your own. The AI trend simply needs more control on how these algorithms collect their data. Say hypothetically they only collect data from a site people post on where EVERYONE is consenting to how it will then be used in the future, rather than stealing art left and right. There can be a moral middle ground one day, we are simply not there yet. Like for example, if someone makes a character and says its inspired by another style, or a movie they watched (which most of our art is) do we then feel as though we have stolen something as well? All art is human experience from memory, transferred down to the hand, onto some kind of traceable form. AI prompts are mixtures of ideas, from which those ideas require a humans experience to decide what that idea might be. The real challenge is knowing if allowing your idea to be seen is through a merit of skill and talent, or simply just thinking about it. Which, we do not tell our kids their art sucks because they didn’t draw the hands right either, yet we appreciate it as it is because its a miracle enough to bear witness to a new soul attempting to transfer what they have in mind to paper. It just doesn’t feel fair to neglect the excitement some people feel when they realize they can experiment with their imagination a little. Even if it hasn’t come from a rewarded end-point of practice and time. We just need a line of ethics, but as time goes on, things will always change, and it’s better to go ahead than go backwards.
