I’m not convinced. I don’t see how licensing the training only is enough. One tiny one-off payment will not compensate for the models subsequently outcompeting the originator with imitiative or derivative works at bewildering scale, in perpetuity.
I expect it will be hard, but don’t we need to legislate for AI models to retain the legend of their training data usage in exquisite detail and for this to be publicly (or legally) available on request?
Imagine every model output having a unique ID that can be used to identify the exact IP used in its training to generate that (uniquely identified) output. Imagine then that any subsequent commercialisation of that output is required to compensate the original creator of the training data with a varying percentage of that revenue.
We do it in music today with sample clearance & copyright licensing, we need to think in a similar vein at a vastly higher level of scale & complexity to come up with a similar mechanism to protect today’s creatives, or there will be an extinction level event across all of these industries in no time at all.
