In the book Player Piano, AI has replaced all but the most technologically gifted workers. People are still employed, but it's mostly large work crew's standing around a single pot hole all day.
This is a more optimistic look at AI btw. It assumes it will raise our quality of life rapidly enough to have a homes with every modern appliance, and jobs to keep people earning money.
