Disabled artist here 🩷 My art is the thing that kept me housed and fed during the YEARS of my life that I was bedridden and unable to walk. It kept me sane, connected me to community and to myself, and gave me an outlet for the complicated feelings I was having about my circumstances. Most of my friends are disabled artists and NONE of them use generative AI. My opinion on what makes art Good, or what makes it Art in the first place, remains this: Art is an expression of your life, time spent in reflection of our own experiences, who we are, and what we like. The Point of Art is to experience its creation. To be a hand that changes what's around you and inside you, so the internal becomes external and the solitude becomes community. The Point of Art is NOT to have a cool image at the end of it. That's an awesome side effect, and a goal many of us work towards! But that's such a narrow perspective on what art can be! There are so many genres that focus on the Experience of it completely outside the visual. Pieces designed to create a discomfort in you that never leaves, to give you perspective on a thought that has never occurred to you and make it stick in your chest like heartbreak you've never known. Generative AI is, at best, an insult to humanity. And I resent being thrown at the helm of that issue by people who never considered my needs until it was convenient for them to martyr me on. Thanks for giving me a space to talk about it 😅 I have big opinions and it's nice to vent. To folks who will be inevitably pissed off by my comment: what have you made with your own body and mind? Do you have children? Would you rather have had a child be constructed for you, incorrectly, by an unfeeling machine, and get a child that looked nothing like what you really look like but close enough if you squint? Have you ever been *moved* by anything you've made? Even if it was a shitty scarf you managed to knit as your first project, or a report you did on a book you read as a kid? You can absolutely keep doing whatever you want to with your time and ideas 🩷 but I hope you feel inspired to create something all on your own 🩷
