If an image is made by AI and people don't know it then they can enjoy it just as well as if the exact same image was made by a human. I have tested this myself by posting AI generated images and observing the feedback before and after the image is revealed to be AI generated. When they didn't know it was AI generated, the image got a lot of positive feedback and the viewers clearly experienced some emotions from viewing it. After they found out, it got more negative feedback instead.
This proves that it is our attitude and the quality of the images that is the issue with the way we enjoy them.
Ultimately what really matters is how the viewer perceives the image and in that way AI generated images can indeed become popular in the future.
What I hope to see is for artists to learn to use these tools to enhance their creative process much in the same way painters from the past had apprentices handle parts of their paintings that weren't meant to be the focus.
