I've been in IT for 20 years and I studied programming a lot in my early years. I tell people that they should learn to code for themselves but don't expect to get a job with it. Learn to code because it's a useful skill that will help you understand how software works. I also recommend reading books on computer design while learning because it tends to pay off better than learning another language at some point. A lot of network admins rely on coding for parts of their job, and a lot of AI will require people to know how to feed in requirements, etc. My programming background comes in useful in a lot of indirect ways. Sometimes I write a small script at my job so that I can automate parts of my job that others don't know how to automate and it makes me stand out. For example, when I see bottlenecks, I'll think of ways to automate it which would take a lot of time for others to eyeball and I can turn repetitive 3 hour jobs into 1 hour jobs.
