The term “AI” has morphed over time to mean basically any computer and network science. And like so much else anymore, the media and politicians are catastrophizing all of it as if it poses an existential threat. It doesn’t. Nothing whatsoever is new about it. And it’s no more ‘intelligent’ than it ever was. Companies have been building computer databases for over 40 years, and the third party industry that exploits the data has been around almost as long. That websites are associating products you’ve purchased with ‘you might like’ suggestions is no different than your local grocer displaying fresh basil and mozzarella next to the baskets of ripe tomatoes.
