meh... the hype is a bit overblown. It's dangerous, but in the way gas engines are. The only reason gas engines are a huge problem is because we built society completely based on using them. Now that we realize there are these huge issues with using them so much, we CANT stop using them without starving huge swaths of the population. That's what will happen with AI. We'll use it for all these great things, it'll be a great success... we'll be completely dependant on it... and THEN we'll find out some subtle thing that makes us realize we need to scale it way back... but by then it'll be too late. We wont be able to turn it off without causing just as much damage as will be caused by leaving it on.
