good video, i hate AI "art" and overuse/misuse of AI as well, but i wanted to comment on the subject of copyright. most people aren't calling for the complete abolition of it, but i think one of the most common and valid criticisms is the insanely long copyright duration. like, author's death + 70 years (or in case of unknown/multiple authors creation + 70/95/120 years) is way too much, it strongly discourages creative, transformative works by anyone who's not a large corporation and cannot afford millions of dollars in licensing fees. with today's copyright laws, things like the Arthurian Mythos, and even a lot of creative retellings of 19th century stories like Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland/Sherlock Holmes retellings and adaptations wouldn't exist, and the lasting cultural impact of these works would be extremely diminished.
like there's truly no reason The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings should still be under copyright in most countries. Tolkien is long dead, even all his children have died by now (most of them living to their 90s), his descendants are wealthy beyond imagination, it's actually insane these works are still under copyright for a few more decades.
i am a huge fan of creative transformative works made by small/unknown artists, and it's insane that for at least 70 years, and potentially until 150 years after publication (in the case of a young author), the only ones allowed to make any sort of commercial works are mega-corporations, who keep doing the same uncreative, 100% profit-orientated rehashings of these works. i truly think this also hurts the legacy and long-lasting cultural impact of these works of fiction. cause right now, the only somewhat allowed forms of creative transformative adaptations of more recent (aka not ~100 years old) works of fiction are fanfic and fanart, both of which have an extremely small reach, and a very narrow audience (on a work-by-work basis). and stuff like movies/video games/other collaborative forms of art that fundamentally require a financial incentive just literally don't get made. and by the time a work of fiction reaches public domain, people have most likely already forgotten about it, unless it's a media giant with extremely popular adaptations like Lord of the Rings.
i think the copyright system is fundamentally broken and heavily stifles creativity. i don't want to abolish it (artists should be able to profit from their works in their lifetime), but life +20-25 years or creation +30-50 years would be more than enough for my opinion. and i feel like most people critiquing the copyright system have similar viewpoints, it's very rare that somebody truly wants complete abolition of copyright.
