The AI Revolution: Will We Work Ourselves Out of a Job?
For years, I've been thinking about something that scares me: the idea that computers, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), will soon do almost all the work humans do. It sounds like science fiction, but what if we reach a point where everything is basically free, because machines make it?
Five years ago, when I talked about this with friends and family, they thought I was crazy. Now, they're starting to agree. We humans don't like change, especially when it makes us feel like we're losing control.
Think about driving. If you spent years learning to drive, it's hard to accept that a self-driving car means anyone can do it, even people who never tried. Your skill, something you worked hard for, becomes ordinary.
A lot of people admit AI will take our jobs, but they think it's far in the future, like a hundred years away. But I think it's much closer, maybe just a decade. We underestimate how fast things are changing. It's like that old puzzle: if you double a dollar every day, how much do you have in a month? The answer is way bigger than you'd guess, because things grow fast when they keep doubling. AI is like that.
People who work on AI, the smartest ones, are saying that jobs will disappear sooner than we think.
This brings up a huge, scary question: what will we do if we don't have to work? It's hard to imagine, but here are two possibilities that worry me:
Scary possibility 1: The Rich Get Rid of the Rest. Maybe the people who have a lot of money and power will decide they don't need everyone else. They might try to get rid of a big part of the population. It sounds horrible, but it makes a kind of cold, logical sense if you think about it.
Scary possibility 2: We Give Up on Life. If we wake up every day with nothing to do, nowhere to go, no purpose, maybe we'll just lose our desire to live. We might just give up. People might stop wanting to live.
These aren't just crazy ideas. They're possible outcomes if we don't think about this now. We need to figure out how to live in a world where work isn't the main thing we do. We need to find new ways to give our lives meaning. The clock is ticking, and we need to act.
