Of all the proposed solutions to prevent future mass layoffs, the only one that could actually make a positive difference is a robot tax. Most of the other ideas just give corporations more incentive to automate and replace human workers. Absolute power protects itself absolutely.
AI and robotics aren’t going away, so we need direct, forward-thinking solutions. Instead of trying to stop automation, we should be preparing people for the new roles it creates; robotic technicians, QA specialists, data analysts, and maintenance experts who keep these systems running.
But there’s another problem that often gets overlooked: outsourcing and insourcing. The issue isn’t with H1B workers, but with the corporations exploiting cheap labor abroad or imported talent to cut costs. The solution mirrors the robot tax. Tax the corporations for outsourcing or insourcing labor so the cost of hiring domestically or internationally is balanced.
These two ideas together, a robot tax and an outsourcing parity tax, would actually help stabilize the workforce while still embracing technological progress. AI isn’t yet capable of replacing humans at scale; from firsthand experience, there are still too many failures, edge cases, and complexities. So instead of panicking about AI, we should be shaping how it integrates into our economy responsibly.
