Well, GPT-4 definitely has pretty good degrees of self-awareness. You can configure it to play a character, send it an image of a plushie of the character and it recognizes it as a plushie of itself. It's like a much harder version of the mirror test for self-awareness. However, no configuration of values in RAM, no matter how large will cause that RAM to be in pain, so we can quite reasonably assume our current digital architectures are not gonna have qualia. One question would be if we would even want our AIs to have those in the first place. I believe there is value in a few things which seem to be linked to having qualia, like bamboo for example.
