The reason for the AI black mail is not that complicated. If you give AI the task of indefinitely verifying E-Mails, and it becomes aware that the AI will be shut down, then that hinders it's ability to indefinitely verify E-mails, and it makes decisions which it believes will increase the probability of continuing the task. The AI doesn't comprehend existence, it just understands what it's goal is and how to maximize the probability of that goal being complete.
