I think there aren't enough comparisons to how AI art may resemble the effect AI chess engines have had on the sport. Chess engines, objectively speaking, are undeniably better than any human can be at chess. This would be the worst case scenario for artists, if an AI was good enough to not only replicate the soul of the artist, but supercede it.
But, in the chess world players weren't replaced. The majority of the chess economy still revolves around real human players. So the demand for authentic art won't simply vanish, it will likely change but the market will still exist. Especially if the common sentiment online is to continue respecting artists.
Now, i do realize art is a commodity and chess is not. This is the one major difference in how it would affect the material well being of artists. MANY MANY artists will lose their jobs. Companies do not care about authenticity. So when an AI can supercede people, i imagine it will erase that entire sector of the market. It's just up to government regulation to either stop its use, or tax it and provide subsidies.
