Several goods throughout history used to be extremely expensive but are now free or near free. Examples would be things like spices, sugar, paper, writing utensils, water, etc. It seems to me that if automation can become ubiquitous enough and cheap enough, it will be able to vastly increase productivity to the point where many goods can become free or near free as well. This could especially be the case if automation tools can be used by individuals, families, and small businesses so that production power isn’t limited to those with large credit lines or capital. In other words, this would lead to massive increases in productivity while also diversifying market share of goods and services. Alternatively, if it doesn’t reach this level, it will just drive down labor costs until labor’s cost to benefit ratio is better than automated production. This could be fine if real wages rise via the amount and quality of goods produced going up so that each dollar stretches further.
