As a writer, I believe learning the foundational skills of writing is essential before using AI technology to write long form prose. If you skip the steps of learning storytelling, you will never be able to use the technology to sharpen or hone your skills. It's easy to forget that AI can be used for more than writing prose. It can review your scenes. It can suggest edits. It can inject sensory details into locations you've never been. Example prompt: If I'm standing in Time's Square, give me two paragraphs of sensory details of what I might experience. --- This is great for the writer who doesn't have money to travel or the sense of self awareness and attention to detail to accumulate the same dense level of description. Like the pen, AI is a tool to sharpen your skills if only you master the basics first. We started with a pen. Now, we have a pen that can write for us if only we craft the world for it to draw. As a creative and writer of the new age, that's how I see it. It's easy to spot the negatives. Use your creativity and shine light on the possibilities. P.S. I'm aware of the issues of copyright, and am totally against AI companies stealing artist's works for training. Even still, putting aside the morality and ethics of using a tool that's ripping people's works, if you're not taking advantage of the possibilities you're doing yourself a disservice as a creative. Let the law men and business men craft a fair system, while we creatives use the tool to express ourselves and sharpen our craft.
