Chain-of-Thought is such an interpretability trap because it does NOT tell you what the model is "thinking," but so many people believe that it does. You actually have to decode the internal circiuts and vectors to know what's going on inside a model, which is much harder. It's quite possible for LLMs to output a CoT sequence that's completely different from the conclusion it comes to. It's just that the model can't continue to do internal inference except by outputting more tokens.
