I'll do you one better, AI will increase the need for SWEs. Having a decent AI assistant makes programming go faster and potentially make the overall price task lower, rendering software a more affordable undertaking for more companies.
And not only that, but I have also seen people with no IT background set up their own apps/ideas... and while they can get a proof of concept to work, they often complain of how unstable it is or how hard it is to make changes. And on more than a single occasion have I seen people discussing hiring SWEs to fix or rewrite their apps.
