If the terminator scenario is possible, I don't think there is much we can do to avoid it. Someone is going to develop the capability - it's inevitable. I think we should be more worried about the other scenarios. The benign scenario is that AI solves human poverty, all disease, lets us travel to distant stars, makes working optional and solves all/most of human beings problems after a period of hell where we have to change from capitalism to a new form of govt. Will the people at the top want that transformation or will they want something more akin to feudalism where they are the lords and there are massive amounts of people at the bottom? If AI starts costing a lot of people their jobs, it's going to become an issue in future elections. We need to elect candidates in favor of UBI. We need an AI tax to be created for companies that use AI so that we have the funding to take care of the people who lose their jobs because of it. It's a very uncertain and scary future.
