The biggest problem in this field is that to do anything HELPFUL in directing or shifting the development of AI from pro-corporate interests and into something more alignment focused comes down to WHY corporations are so focused on it: money. THEY have the funds to do what they want and go BIG. Everyone else that might be more interested in a more balanced approach? Barring a few lucky individuals, they don't have the funds to actually try. I've looked myself into a project and to even get it started would cost in the 500k - 8M range. Who has that kind of money handy for an IDEA? As good as it might be, the odds are better in winning a lottery. That's the real tragedy of the AI world - those with the money are the ones picking what way we go. And we can see in every other aspect of the world how that's gone for the rest of us.
