This is highly alarming because these systems are still in their infancy with respect to their ability to understand and manipulate humans. Some systems are already demonstrating “scheming” behaviours. It’s amazing to me that basically a sophisticated statistical model that essentially predicts the next word can be perceived by some people as having consciousness and self awareness. At the same time the behaviours, if we can call them that, are such a great simulation of how a human might respond, that it’s easy to see how these AIs can capture our attention. My “conversations” with ChatGPT have dumbfounded me as they were nuanced and creative and they nailed down what I was seeking so precisely. And it’s still just early days!
