With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, many are pointing to the inevitable replacement of traditional jobs—especially those involving repetitive or technical-cognitive tasks. In response, there's a growing narrative that romanticizes or suggests a mass shift toward manual labor—such as farming, construction, or other hands-on work—as if these are viable and sustainable alternatives for the future of employment.
However, there's a critical point that often gets overlooked: the job market, like any economic system, operates on supply and demand. If a large number of people are pushed or redirected into manual labor, we’ll inevitably face an oversupply of manual labor. As a direct consequence, the value of labor (wages per hour) is likely to plummet, precisely because of the surplus in supply relative to limited demand.
So, contrary to the utopian idea that everyone can “return to the land” or “work with their hands” to escape automation, what we’re more likely to see is further degradation of these jobs—lower wages, fiercer competition, and poorer working conditions. Without a broader restructuring of labor relations, income distribution, and how we value human work, this "solution" merely shifts the problem rather than solving it.
The real issue, then, isn’t just about changing the type of work we do. It’s about redefining the value of labor in a society where automation plays an increasingly dominant role. We need policies and conversations focused on wealth redistribution, reduced working hours, new forms of basic income, and above all, a new understanding of what it means to “work” in a world where machines are doing more and more for us.
