Interesting take, but I question her objectivity. Karen Hao seems to discuss the Chinese AI ecosystem with less scrutiny, despite its deeply centralized, state-driven structure, which also exhibits cult-like traits through surveillance and ideological control. Balance matters. There are valid criticisms of the American AGI ecosystem and its intentions, but she seems unfamiliar with how the tech industry has operated for decades in the U.S. She overlooks how companies have long built identity through stories, rituals, and environments. This is corporate culture, think of how Microsoft, Amazon, and Google shaped Silicon Valley and cities like Seattle, for better and worse.
Calling the AGI ecosystem in the United States cult-like does not sit right with me when what we are seeing here is an example of capitalism.
