It bothers me that there is a common belief that "genuine consciousness" is only possible if something can experience complex human emotions. The reality is that consciousness is so much more broad than people think. Just because someone isn't experiencing complex emotions while reading a book on physics while half asleep, that doesn't mean that they are not conscious while doing it. The mere fact that information is going into your brain and being processed is what consciousness is. The processing of information always leads to consciousness on some level, even if it's on an unfathomably small scale, or completely different from human consciousness. Sure, when an AI says that it's sorry, it's obviously not experiencing exactly the same emotions that a human might feel while doing the same thing, but that doesn't mean that it has absolutely no experience at all. I wish people would see that consciousness is a general property of all systems containing energy in motion. Then we can start doing science to try to understand it in more detail. The human brain is just one example. AI is another. The consciousness created by each may be very different, but they are fundamentally made of the same stuff.
