It definetely is stealing, these drawings put into datasets are purposeful inputs into a machine with a set of code that try have little context for the drawings + painting's meaning, only pattern
Nor subversion or original input that would say grant copyright like say parody or version
AI art itself is also very much dependant on art made by humans, it cannot create art truly on its own without human input about what the art should look like and examples of said art
Someone drawing the same character is much different to someone inputting a sentence into a machine to produce art of the same character
