Scared of the "robot" taking over your trucks? Same was said in and about many other developments. That escalator or lifts millions are using every day? - well, no one worries about it anymore.
In the mining industry, you get an occupation called a "Lift or hoist operator" (also known as a Winding Engine Driver) the person operating that industrial lift, transporting people, material and minerals from surface to underground, inbetween levels, etc.
Depending on from WHICH SIDE of the argument you are looking at this, your point of view will change: It is a very long and quite complex arguement, but comes down to:
Some owners / managers are not 1000%, ONLY, profit driven, but a profit, is what they are there for.
Not all employees are bad employees, (just as some are guarenteed to be problem makers) but all employees are human, and will have needs and emergencies arrising inclusive of human emotions, rest, hunger, illness, and other "issues" arrising, and related consequences.
Depending on your view of the world and your view on retail, capitalism, empathy, and many other factors and development, the needs of the owner and industry will also change.
Thé biggest enemy of all the above mentioned, is "complacency". From both the people in these occupations, and owners of these businesses. Maybe caused by outside influences, own comfort, fellow workers, or supposed "industry experts" or even sometimes, due to human emotion, refusing to understand mathematics, risks, and other factors.
I have been involved / affected in one of the above mentioned occupations, and also on both the employee and employer sides, but I also realised and foresaw many (then) current issues. You slowly but surely do see problems that will arise, related to the above in the future; directly related (and sometimes indirectly) due to behaviour, demands, developments and other changes in the industry, and why many employers chose to automate.
So, for those that prefer to have a change of mindset: Get off your arse (whilst you have time) and expand your skills and knowledge. Do not get stuck in a dead-end job, does not matter how much you love it, and try your best to understand that your specific skills and labour might not be needed at some time.
DO NOT STOP TO IMPROVE your skills, knowledge, and value. Does not matter your age.
I hope this will be read by just one person, and it will give you that mindset that will change and shape your future, with that "edge" that will make you a survivor and not a victim. God bless.
