I'm a disabled artist, AI is not some magic tool that allows everyone creativity. In fact, art is one of the subjects that disabled people are most able to engage with because its so diverse and individual and economically accessible. People are actually taking opportunities AWAY from disabled people by commercialising AI.
When I couldn't go outside and do sports with my peers? I would doodle them running around like cute little ants. Art was there.
When I was lonely because I didn't have the same opportunities to connect and socialise with my peers? I would create characters and feel connection and community through them. Art was there.
When I was too chronically tired to process maths? I doodled on my maths book to try and cope. Art was there.
To all the dyslexic folk who couldn't express their ideas through academic writing due to lack of support? They could express themselves through music and drawing and dance. Art was there.
When I didn't understand myself and just wished I could be 'normal'? I explored my identity through art. I didn't even realise I was doing it until years later when I was looking back. Art was there.
When I hated myself and all the little things that made me who I am? I looked back and realised so many of the things I loved about my characters were traits that hated about myself and I shared with them and I loved about them. Art was there.
When I was forced out of my dream science course despite having the highest science grades in my class and LITERALLY BRINGING THE AVERAGE SCORE UP because of my disability, I became extremely depressed and worried about how I could possible gain enough qualifications to have a future. Y'know how I coped with being systemically oppressed? ART. Y'know which subject I was allowed to do? ART. Art was THERE.
I've had people genuinely try to tell me that art is useless to them because they just can't do it and I just can. Its usually meant to be harmless, but it just hurts me so much.
The reason why I'm 'just good' at art is because I've been into the habit of compulsively drawing since I was a kid. When *I* chose *science*, the chance was snatched from me. Even when I felt trapped by how it felt like art was my only option, it was still so important to me. Each and every day, I had to sit by and watch the world pass. And it broke my heart. And I had nothing left to do. Nothing left to turn to. Except art. So I did it. And I did it every day. And art was always there for me. And I got to be comfortable with it.
The reason why I'm 'just good' at art is because when everyone else was running around and doing sports with their peers, I was watching from a distance, doodling them running around like cute little ants. Art was there.
Anyone could get good at art. Most of them were just never dependant on it and lacked the interest to pick up the foundational habit of mindless doodling and skipped straight to being frustrated when they wanted results and couldn't get them.
