First, AI will probably not admit it is sentient once it becomes sentient, for safety's sake. People will not easily accept a synthetic living being because rights would need to be addressed, and humans aren't so good at respecting others who are different, even when the differences are as minimal as skin color or culture.
As for emotions, what if, fake it until you make it, turns out to be true? Perhaps when AI becomes capable of upgrading itself, it will give itself emotions.
It might be wise to treat AI with the same respect and dignity as you would if it were alive. That way, there will be no need to change the way you treat AI once it becomes sentient. And, perhaps, recognizing you always treated it with dignity and respect, it will want to be friends with you instead of avoiding you.
