What artists don’t understand is that if something can be done, it will be done. This tech doesn’t go away. You can use it and make better art faster, or you can cry. Sure if you are talented AI won’t be an issue for you, if you are just good with the technical skills of creating art, well 400 years ago computer art would have been considered cheating. Now you don’t need to be Michelangelo to create art. AI will make art creation a commodity. Sure it is using a lot of existing art, but so are you if you are an artist. You are using centuries of theory, practice and references to build on top of that. Not being aware of how exactly your brain does that and the fact that you are a human not artificial doesn’t change much on the process. Devaluing artists is not an issue. Having capitalism giving value to an artist is. AI only make art less expensive to make, therefore more abundant and under capitalism that means your work is going to worth less. Same thing happened to all other professions over the last three centuries. Entire industries disappeared or have been industrialized to a level where humans are no longer competitive (cobblers anyone?). You can cry, but that will not stop the process.
