Well, at least everybody now knows the antonym of schadenfreude.
On the one hand, I kind of get why people treat chatgpt and similar language models as truth-telling oracles; the advertising and hype have all positioned them as such. On the other hand, it's beyond bizarre to go back to your oracle once it's been caught in a lie to double down on them.
On the gripping hand, we're really being done a disservice by the wild anthropomorphizing everyone is doing of these AI tools. We ascribe intent to them, we talk about them lying or hallucinating; we behave as if a program using a statistical model to produce text that looks like everything in its dataset _should_ do more than create somewhat convincing pastiche.
