If you think our government did a poor job of helping citizens with the transition from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, just wait till you see the chaos and pain with the transition to an AI economy. We will become a country without any middle class at all and only serfs and lords not much different from the Feudalism of the middle ages. I'm a retired engineer and even before AI, our salaries were being beat down by companies abusing the H1-B visa system and hiring foreign engineers at well below market rate, but with AI, many engineering jobs (and many other professions) will be eliminated altogether. An engineering degree used to be a way for us poor folks to climb the ladder to the middle class, but that option may not be available to future generations.
