i feel for the state of artists losing their opportunities, but sadly the vast majority of humanity is already in a state of little/zero opportunity and most of us have to work financially, physically, emotionally, and/or mentally exploitative jobs to survive.
so it's a bit disingenuous to say that there's a lack of empathy on anyone's part for not appreciating this problem. we just already have the problem, and to a worse extent. saying so actually seems like a lack of empathy on artists parts, for many people have been suffering from these issues for far longer. most folx don't have the skills, "talent", or resources that online artists do or the privilege to create art that sustains their lives.
I do not say this to mean that i think artists have it easy, but to show that it's not an empathy problem, it's a systemic one. most people are having a hard enough time fighting for their own sliver of the pie (a pie that would easily sustain everyone, if not for the few people that found a way to steal and hoard most of it), to worry about others getting theirs. kind of like the airplane scenario where one must put on their own air before helping others with theirs. artists just happen to be on a plane where everyone is having a hard time getting their own air.
and while it might not be fully accurate, there's a perception that artists don't have to work as hard, whether due to natural talent or access to privileged resources. it doesn't matter if artists train themselves night and day their whole lives to get where they are, almost everyone else also has to work their whole lives in physically and mentally detrimental jobs to even stay alive. at least artists work would seem to be self-fulfilling. not many have even that.
many of the artists getting the visibility are artists who've been privileged to have their art sustain their livelihoods. they don't have to work a physically grueling job, deal with cruel bosses, rigid rules of conduct, or to be obedience to dehumanizing requirements. so the perception is true in their case and everyone is just going to be like "welcome to the club, where everyone of us have had to give up our passions and dreams to survive."
so sadly, i feel like artists kind of at the back of the line. a line where people with harder lives and less opportunity have been waiting far longer than any artists complaining that a new tool is making them obsolete unfairly, as has happened to countless people in countless industries since the dawn of capitalism and the industrial revolution.
as such, i think artists would be better served if they stop focusing on how this problem impacts them or their industry individually (which is ignorant at best, and narcissistic at worst), and join the wider discussion about how capitalism is exploiting almost everybody negatively globally, and getting involved in solidarity movements to end it's inequitable reign over humanity.
a.i. is about to put upwards of 25 million not-artists out of work in the next 5 years, let alone artists. the sanctity of copywrites is sort of a backburner issue compared to that.
so idk, maybe form ranks and 347 the rich?
