It's not going to become conscious anytime soon because what people are referring to as "AI" these days is nothing but a glorified predictive text model. It's not smart. It's just programmed to appear to be smart, and it forms coherent sentences by pulling from a body of human texts. Coherent sentences are more than enough to fool many people into thinking they're speaking to a human.
