Amazon started out over 20 years ago as a convenient way to shop for books. They had low prices and fast delivery. And now that a lot of brick and mortar bookstores and bookstore chains have gone out of business, and many young people simply don't know how else they could get a book other than going on Amazon, they can charge whatever they want and upsell you on Amazon Prime at every turn.
These AI "tools" are trying to do the same for anything that you use your brain for. If they can be the easier and more convenient way to look up some trivia, write an essay, plan meals, or get a reference image, then once the majority of people are dependent on them they can charge whatever they want.
