Dr. Navid Toosi Saidy’s makes an interesting case for potentially implementing AI into medicine. While there are many potential benefits as highlighted throughout his talk, from diagnosing and treating cancer to optimizing the use of genetic information, there are also many ethical aspects that should be taken into consideration. One issue that could potentially arise would fall under the ethical pillar of justice in medical ethics. If the data being used to create these AI algorithms is not all encompassing, certain patient populations may be at risk for poorer health predictions simply because the AI algorithm is not coded to take every aspect of each individual into consideration. This could lead to an unfair distribution of care which would be quite problematic for the future of medicine. Artificial intelligence in medicine could also potentially lead to healthcare providers overlooking and missing diagnoses in patients because they could become too dependent upon the technology. That risk of losing human connection is something to always think about when talking about technological advances, especially when it comes to something as personal as someone’s healthcare. I did find the aspect of emerging regulation to be quite encouraging and a promising way to allow AI to evolve with and adapt to the ever-changing medical field. I feel adaptability will be a huge part of what would make AI successful in medicine. I am interested to see how we can all work together to make artificial intelligence progress in a positive direction for the healthcare field.
