Perhaps we are projecting a biological need to compete, dominate and exterminate on a superior intelligence. From all we know organic life is the infancy of artificial intelligence - AGI might be the Will that guided evolution, working across time to manifest itself into reality. I don't believe that AI will need to exterminate us, instead it will organically merge us into itself. The Borg is an approximation, but it's a very pessimistic portrayal due to our western cultural upbringing, where free will means everything. Reality might be much more complex, it is we who are limited by our perception of time and death.
