Machine Learning system might be very good at estimating hiw far something is from a video, but no amount of Machine Learning will fix the fact that cameras can't see well in the dark. "Autopilot" should not engage when the visibility is low. Extra sensors ToF, Lidar, etc should be used for accurate measurements and more importantly in low visibility situations.
