I would argue that the dictionary definition of consciousness isn’t far off from what Ai is nowadays. People like to move the goalpost or no true Scotsman about it. But what they mean is it will never be conscious or intelligent in the way that a person is, well that’s why the word artificial is used here. It can be conscious without worrying about shit needlessly. It could easily become more conscious as we do not yet understand emergent properties. When properties appear after scaling up Ai models it is not always understood how or why those properties emerged. Not only that there isn’t much way of easily predicting what properties will emerge because of this
