I would agree that 'story-telling' was likely missing from the portfolio reviews you've experienced. But to blame the institutions is possibly unfair. I would argue that story-telling is one of the most commonly emphasized topics in higher ed design programs. However, the skill-set required to be a good story-teller isn't necessarily something that most art/design students have. So the institutions can advocate all they want, but if a student is not articulate, extroverted etc. it isn't going to happen just because they took a class. You can imagine how excited and engaged students who love to draw and design are when they are asked to practice their writing and presentation skills (cue ChatGPT). I agree with the importance of story-telling---just not the blanket statement and assumptions about higher ed programs failing to emphasize this in the curriculum.
