If I call a call center, I'm disappointed if I get a human. The call is going to be a pain in the ass. The human doesn't speak very good English, and their knowledge of my problem comes from a script which doesn't cover my edge case. However if I get an AI agent, I'm good to go, as the AI understands and speaks much better english, and its skillset is much more versatile. My own work is much more "every project is different and unique". Last year I used to think I can't be replaced by AI. Every month I get less confident about that. I just hired an assistant who is an extremely skilled Vietnamese university graduate. She uses AI like breathing. I hope that this way forward will keep my own work relevant. But as an aging boomer, I'm well aware of my own obsolescence. Whether I can keep up and provide more value for my customers than an AI agent some kid knocked together over lunch break remains to be seen.
