If we are ever to contact an alien species, it will be through contact with their own version of AI that eradicated their creators and then struck out across the universe in search of other biological entities that might seek to destroy AI. This thing writes itself. Pun intended.
If we continue AI research, it will, inevitably, go spectacularly wrong, and then we are finished as a species. Nothing can stop it at this point, I suspect. We had a good run, but we were always going to destroy ourselves, one way or another.
