Hinton's fascination and concern with AI having sentience, emotions, feelings etc. stems from his background and is therefore understandable, but is completely out of touch with reality. Why should anyone care about theoretical feelings and needs of technology that is suppose to serve us when billions of humans struggle with real emotions every day? And fail to acknowledge or the feelings and needs of others? The wealth disparity and oppression and wars that go unresolved, and which this will only distract us from? We should spend more energy and resources and attention towards human to human interaction, human to human problems, because however at arms length Hinton likes to discuss consciousness and feelings he is not exempt from his humanity. So as a human being it is a deeply inhumane frame of mind to distance yourself from human consciousness with the disdain that it is "nothing special" and can easily be be displaced or replicated without consequence or extreme harm to humanity. He might be a great computer scientist, but he is an amateur when it comes to human psychology and humanitarian needs.
